i'd like it to get relatively big, at least 18" full grown. (i want to purchase a baby though) also, i'd like it to be colorful and have a good temperment. ideas? the pet stores tend to try to sell you what they have so i'd like to know what i want then go to a real reptile store. i've owned reptiles in the past but no monitors...

i would recommend a tree monitor...most other species of monitor lizards live in more arid areas... the tree monitor is also the smallest of the monitor lizards only reaching 36" making it much more suitable than opposed to others that reach 72"+... almost all monitors can have snappy temperments, but can grow to get used to you. the tree monitor is also one of the most beautiful monitor lizards, especially the emerald tree monitor. the tree monitor is a climber(obviously) and requires a tall cage with some humidity but not alot, and alot of climbing branches... hope that helps :)

Tree monitors would be the only ones that would do well in high humidity. Many of these are difficult to keep, though. You might want to look into a Timor monitor, a dwarf tree monitor that only gets to be about 2 ft., but is easier to keep than most of the others. I've known 3, and they all have good personalities (no biters). They are fast, and skittish when you first try to pick them up, but calm down in no time. Black or dark gray with white spots. They are fairly expensive, though, and not common to find in a pet store. You might find a breeder online, or ask a local pet store if they can get one for you. Lizards don't play, they devour and champagne(plenty), climb, run, and sleep. You can preserve and cuddle a few however now not all. Housing for such a lot lizards is beautiful large. Most lizards devour bugs, a few devour mice, a few devour vegetables and fruit and a few devour a combination of all that. I don't suggest folks get lizards as pets, they're very complicated to deal with and folks grow to be killing them. I've noticeable such a lot of abused and uncared for reptiles and whenever I feel to myself how can any individual sit down there and say this animal is healthful, reply is they do not know any bigger folks are instructed the unsuitable matters both by means of the Internet, books, or the puppy retailer staff. If making a decision to get a lizard I endorse a leopard gecko or a Bearded Dragon they're the simplest to deal with and the friendliest. Make definite you already know the whole lot approximately the lizard you decide upon earlier than you get it.

Dolf ^^^ is right on tree monotors are the best choice. Monitors are usally a difficult speicies to keep, and like alot of large lizards, they are offen put up for adoption when they grow.

Tegues are a pretty speices too, they have alot in common with monitors, but they are from south America.
Blue Tegues are the smallest tegu speices

Also check out Solomon island skinks"monkey tailes skinks" they are a very cool lizard!!

Thats a couple alternatives. but like any reptile you get, you have to do alot of researce before you buy them.

The best places to pick up reptiles are the breeders, and reptile shows. Im a big fan of geckos and true Chameleaons, so i have very little knowlege about there big guys, except that they are scary!!
