The Republican Party and the Democratic Party are "blanket parties". That is, there are people of varying beliefs in each party because they are so popular. Example: I vote Democrat, but I'm really a Social Democrat. Also, there are still many 3rd parties such as Libertarians and the Green Party.

No. The first answer is not so. The American People, we, are pelted constantly with yes/no, black/white, left/right ideological questions where there are only 2 sides to the answers (ie. abortion, religion, race, nationality, sexual orientation, etc.). This is to engineer us into seeing a two party system as natural. Most of these issues are personal decisions, revelations and beliefs that should be kept personal.
In Truth, the party leaders, the people on powerful regulation committees and elite on both sides of the isles who make decisions are paid by the same Special Interest and Corporate Lobbyist groups. They use vice issues to keep The People divided and against one another so they stay in power. It is called 'divide and conquer'.
This is accomplished by the wealthy and elite/powerful who find two people from either side that will work for them and then fund both people's campaigns (one Democrat and one Republican). Because other people do not have their funding, those two people are the only ones who make it on the ballot and viola, the powerful, extremely wealthy and elite get who they want in office, all ways and always.
