Easy..
1) Paid VERY well.
2) They can "snoop" on everyone else in the office who is surfing the 'net.
3) Their primary function is to keep the network and computers in top running order. ie...if everything is ok they can relax. Yes, that means they get paid to play games if everything is running smoothly.

If you are very computer literate, but not in IT...
Show it. You'll get on their good side and they'll leave you alone, unless you violate a company policy. In that case they'll come to you rather than your boss.

The BIG cons to IT
1) On call 24 hrs a day. If there is a problem in the middle of the night like say...2am...they have to go fix it.
2) Must arrive in the office earlier than everyone else if making major updates/upgrades to the computers and/or network.

One of my previous employers had an in house IT department of 2 guys...responsible for the network + little over 100 computers.

Because when we studied to do other things computers came into the picture as a tool that we now use. Since these guys are needed to keep things running (other fields really aren't taught) they have a sense that without them we are useless.

Funny how you don't get this kind of treatment from the auto mechanic.

LOL our IT guy has a really big ego. In fact he thinks he knows more than his own boss. I would say they have big egos because the whole company depends on them. It gives them a God-like quality
