And I have not gotten a chance to put it in the ground. It has started to show green leaves and some flowering. We are expected to have a hard freeze in the next couple of days. What should I do, wait till it warms up a bit before I plant it? While it is out of the ground how should I care for it I don't want it to die on me!! Dumb me I should have planted it immediately, since we so far have had a calm winter in N Ga this year!

I'm in Zone 7b - similar to N. Georgia. Your tree is breaking dormancy. DO NOT set it outside now. Wait until mid March to set it out. Plant it in a container for now and keep it in your garage or another place between 32 F and 45 F. Do not let it freeze.

I would wait until the last frost, because the tree is used to being in a pot with protected roots, you could kill it if you expose it to the harsh weather. Remember to water it when you feel the soil 1/2" to 1" into the pot, if it is dry water it, if its moist wait a day or two then water it.

If you have too, wrap the tub in insulation and then plastic wrap to keep the frost from getting into the pot.

Warm dry place is suitable like the garage away from the garage door that goes outside.

go here www.jacksonandperkins.com to check out when you should plant your tree. =o)

Good luck.

if the tree is trying to bud its to late to plant it right now it will freeze if the weather is bad wait for the really bad cold to leave then plant it and prune it as well this will knock it back some and make the sap go down it should be ok from a nursery in tennessee

Wait until the last frost then plant it outside. Until then try to keep it in a sunny spot in the house and water it twice a week.

WHAT YOU CAN DO IS CONTACT THE LOCAL NURSERY IN YOUR AREA FOR CLIMATE CONTROL. THEY WILL HELP YOU PRESERVE THE TREE UNTIL THEN. OR YOU CAN PURCHASE A LARGE FLOWER POT AND PLANT IT IN THERE UNTIL YOUR WEATHER PERMIT THE NEXT PLANTING SEASON
