I only have running shoes...will that work? Or do I need something else? I don't think the place rents them out to people. I'm going to be going with some friends...and I think they have more expierence than I do. I don't want to look like an idiot. Should I go out and buy a pair or what? How much are they, anyway?

Obviously climbing shoes would be ideal because they fit very snugly to your feet and have specialized rubber that grips the wall better than sneakers or running shoes. I'd be very surprised to learn that the indoor climbing gym does not rent shoes. If they don't maybe call your buddy first to see if he has an extra pair. Buying a pair would be costly to you, I paid $100 for mine. They usually range between $60 and $150. A climbing tip as well: beginners always try to use their hands too much. All of the best climbers in the world are amazing with their footwork. So when you're stuck LOOK DOWN and find some foot holds!! Good luck.

1. you will not look any more like an idiot than anyone else who is a beginner there. Don't worry. 2. You are not too week. Get a little instruction on how to keep your weight over your feet and use style and balance to compensate for strength and you will be a better climber for it. 3. Rent a harness. You don't need a chalk bag. 4. Rent climbing shoes, they improve your performance significantly over running shoes. You could stop by the wall prior to your date and see what other people are doing and ask the people at the front desk these questions.

Usualy you can rent them at the front desk. They might be 5 $ for 1 hour. Make sure you have shoes that are tight or they don't fit you. But you'll get used to them and only think of climbing. Have fun.

I just got my first pair recently. i spent 80 bucks. they make a huge difference. if you are going to be climbing a decent amount, i would highly recommend buying them. go to ems and talk to someone. they can point you in the right direction, find the best shoe for you, and find the right size. but yeah, if your going to be climbing alot, there is no substitution for your own shoes, it makes a helluva difference.
