My sister went to the petstore and discovered bettas in little bags with dirty water in them, and the bettas were not even fully covered in water. Something needs to be done about this.

I think the way they are kept once they are bought should be changed first. At least shipping is only a few days and not a year or more being kept in a tiny little bowl with no heater and no filter then only having the water changed once it gets dirty. It's not that hard to provide the fish with what it needs but so many people don't take the time to learn the correct way.

Bettas are my favorite kind of fish. The dirty water must mean that it was packed from the rice fields or something somewhat similar to it. Bettas help rice farmers by controlling the insect population. Rice grows in a marsh/swamp place so this must be where the dirty water comes from. Also, if you like bettas, you will know they breathe oxygen also directly from the air. The minimum survival environment they need is just to have their skin moisturized and food in a ready supply next to them. This will not last forever and can cause the betta to become sick. What pet store did you go to anyways? I'll try and send an Humane Animal Care team there. I agree with you that something should be done about this, because animals deserve to live in a good place at least.

The only thing you can do is to start writing letters and emails to the big pet companies. Oh and don't buy bettas either. Yes I know it is tempting to save the life of a poor abused fish, but all the store is going to do is use the money they made off of you and buy more bettas shipped the same way. I don't buy bettas from stores anymore. It costs a little more, but I buy online from reputable dealers. That way I know the bettas are cared for as fish, not as money making products.

All of the major chain stores get them from breeders who ship them over sees like this.

Petsmart, PetCo, Walmart are the main ones. Most smaller chains/stores do as well.

I feel your pain.. i am a huge betta lover. I dont think it is right what is being done to them.

Not selling them at all would be the best solution. Taking them out of their natural living environment, and putting them in plastic bags in dirty water with no oxygen content is cruel.

Complain to the store manager. It depends on how the breeder ships them, not all bettas are like that. The store can change breeders (it could be the store is getting the cheapest breeder not best quality).

Nothing and you don't know what you're talking about. Get an education before you go "activist".
