Although itself mountainous the Assyrian homelands were easily approached over level terrain that was hard to defend. To keep invaders from their borders the Assyrians chose to occupy the surrounding territory. The strategic objective of an aggressive policy was defensive - but when they found out just how profitable it could be - why they just kept on going.

The lands they used were also very important. The more land you owned near the rivers the more likely you were to create an excess of goods, please the gods, and then they will bless you.
