I'm getting bored of the stuff in the book, and I'd like to try to play some actual songs... I listen to (real) metal, and I'm wondering if anyone knows some easier songs that I could easily figure out. Preferably a song that I can hear the guitar clearly when I listen to it and not get confused. Any recommendations?

I'm a fan of melodic death metal, but most of it is probably far too complicated. Remember, I'm just starting out. This is my first venture away from the book.

No metalcore Lamb of God stuff, please, I can't stand it.

One of the easiest songs is Judas Priest - Breaking the law. It's so easy that band members of a band i listen to used it to switch their instruments on the stage and each one of them played another's instrument. And they pulled it off quite well :)

That is DEFINITELY not a good reason to quit. There are really two legitimate things you can do here. If you feel that you are the kinda person who hates to quit, then keep trying the song, I've done that with songs and always gotten them eventually. But honestly what i would do is just take a break from that song and learn some new ones then come back to it and it will seem like a piece of cake.

Visit www.ultimateguitar.com
Search up a good song you like and check the skill level of the song. If it says novice its perfect for you.
Some songs I would reccomend would be
Smoke on the Water - Deep Purple
I Love Rock and Roll - forgot artist
Enter Sandman - Metallica (a bit more difficult)
A lot of AC/DC song work great too.

You could try Iron Man, Paranoid and Black Sabbath by Black Sabbath. they're slow and you can train quite well on them. Also try smoke on the water and black night by Deep Purple, black night will improve your speed a bit. Also when you've advanced a bit on these, try some Led Zeppelin, like Heartbreaker, it's a bit complicated, but not too much, should get you going quite well from then on.

I never tried it but what about something like Pantera - Walk. Sounds like you could just put it in a dropped-D tuning and just riff away!
