So i've gone to DEVICE MANAGER to sort it all out, and nothing is showing up as a device. Like, there's nothing there.

Can someone please help me? Because of the USB issue, my ipod and printer are NOT working.

Any info on what to do would be great.

I have a Windows XP Home Edition

mmmm well

to cafetom: you had said click where my computer name was? there's no computer name there or anything.

in general:
this is what it looks like

i open up device manager...big square box...says DEVICE MANAGER at the top of the window, ya know, with the normal minimize, restore down, and close.
under that: FILE, ACTION, VIEW, and HELP
under that: a few icons: SHOW/HIDE CONSOLE TREE, HELP, SCAN FOR HARDWARE CHANGES, UPDATE DRIVER, UNINSTALL, ENABLE, DISABLE

the rest of the window is just white space. none of the buttons at the top do anything

Double-clicking ADD HARDWARE...nothing happens.
everything else in CONTROL PANEL opens, no problem

You haven't given us much to work with here. READ THIS WHOLE ANSWER BEFORE PROCEEDING! Did they suddenly STOP working, is this a new PC or what? My suggestion is this:
Run the Add Hardware wizard, and see if it detects your USB controller. You will need the system disk that came with your computer. If Add hardware detects your USB controller, insert the system disk and run the setup program off of it. As a matter of fact, you might want to just try that anyhow. If your PC manufacturer has a good setup program, it will install all the drivers for all the system devices. Then, reboot your PC, and see if Windows detects the USB devices. If it does, it will install the USB controller, USB root hub, and USB Host controller (possibly more than one instance of each-depending upon how many ports you have). It will then detect and (probably) install any USB devices you have, and may ask you for printer drivers. One other thing-are you using a laptop? If not, how are your keyboard and mouse connected? Are you using an external hub? Does it have an A/C adapter that needs to be plugged in?

Hey Dudette,

In device manager, right click on the top by your computer name, and then click on "Scan for hardware changes" This should force anything that it sees to try to install itself.

However, it sounds like a virus or bug.

Let me know how it works.

If your computer has an AMD CPU, and Viatech USB Host Controllers; changing the USB Host Controller drivers to standard or generic drivers, may work.
