Cobwebs are spider webs. Cob or coppe is an
early English word for spider. Spider webs that
were unnoticed because of their fineness may
eventually accumulate dust particles so that they
become much more conspicuous, but dust particles do not form cobwebs by themselves.

The type of irregular web generally called a cobweb is usually spun by a theridiid or pholcid
spider in houses. Daddylonglegs spider is a
possible term for pholcids, but should be avoided
because of confusion with the real daddylonglegs
which are not spiders. In the United States a
daddylonglegs is an arachnid of the group that is
called phalangids or opilionids, in England the
thing called daddylonglegs is a fly of the kind that
is called a cranefly.

Cob webs are formed by slow moving dust particles that cling together, usually in high corners of your rooms. The dust particles get trapped in the corners as air moves through the house. Spider webs are a secretion. Good question by the way! For years I thought there were these strange bugs called "Cobs" but no one ever sees them!

Cobwebs are the same as spiderwebs. There is no strict difference between them - rather personal preference. Some people call them spiderwebs when they have a spider, and cobwebs when they are deserted Others call them spiderwebs outside and cobwebs inside. However, looking at definitions: Spiderweb: A spider web, spiderweb, spider's web or cobweb (from the obsolete word "coppe", meaning "spider")

Cobwebs are spider webs. Different species of spider spin different shapes and sizes of web. Some house spiders and daddy longlegs spiders spin raggedy webs in corners that collect dust if they are not removed.

Dust does not form itself into cobwebs, a spider is involved.
