Tell them you had already made plans and forgot, or you have a family emergency unless its with family then say your friend has an emergency and you have to go and help them, your car won't start, you are sick or have a bad headache or your friends car broke down on their way back into town from somewhere and you have to go and get them.

Most people are polite enough to not ask any questions, esp if you first sound sad and then quickly say you haven't much time because you have to catch a plane etc. also, they are not going to ask you to reschedule since they understand it may be awhile before you will be ready. HTH
