Back problems are a potential side effect. Like anything else, it's hard to know which potential side effects you might actually experience. You have to weigh the potential risks and benefits and decide if it's worth it to you or not.

Yes, I have been told by several dr's that my cronic lower back pain came from the epidurals that I had during delivery. I had 1 with my first child that caused severe pain. I went to a neurologist that gave me 2 cortizone shots to ease the pain... did nothing. With my second child, they were training someone to do the epidural and they missed. They went straight thru my spinal column. I should be paralized, but thank God that didn't happen. So, they had to do it a 2nd time. Then about 4 days after we came home from the hospital, I had to go back for a blood patch. The mistake of the trainee caused me to leak spinal fluid causing me to have a spinal headache. (worst pain I have ever had!!!). So, thats...6 shots in my back so far.... With my 3rd child, I tried REALLY hard to not request anything along the lines of an epidural.. but the pain was too bad... Bad thing, I had them do it.. the freaking thing didnt work. Too much scar tissue and damage to that area of my lower back.
IF it is done correctly you should have NO problems! I wish you the best. I feel sure my epidural luck is just a freak of nature..lol

I've had 4 epidurals and never had a problem. I also have scoliosis (genetic bone disorder that causes the spine to curve in the shape of an "s"). My doctor said it might be difficult to get one, but I had no problems with any of them. I do know some people who have had problems. You can have an adverse reaction to any kind of anthestetic (which is what an epidural is). I say, if you want one then get one. I probably could've had my last one without an epidural, but my insurance required it since I was getting my tubes tied after delivery. Good luck and let the decision be yours and ignore any negative nellies.

As with everything the epidural carries a risk. You could have migraines, back aches, stiffness, and in RARE cases even become paralyzed on a permanent or temporary basis. This is where a child birth education class would come in handy. You can get some honest advice (from medical personnel, not yahoo freaks like me lol) and make a decision based on the risks. I had a spinal block for a c-section (it's similar, but with stronger medication) and I did have back spasms for about a month after wards. It was worth it though! Good Luck!!

Some people do, some dont. I have never had an epidural with either of my 3 babys, and dont intend on one either with this one, because I do have a friend who had her 3rd baby in November and decided to have an epidural and she says never again will she do that, and told me not even to try it. She was miserable and is still having pains from it. She had her first 2 natural and told me that natural was better for her. Its just a risk you will take, but it doent happen like that too all.

I had an epidural when my daughter was born 1 1/2 years ago, and I have not had any lingering effects from it at all. I do have friends who say they still have pain from theirs, though. I think it makes a big difference to have an experienced anesthesiologist who does a lot of epidurals. I gave birth at a huge hospital that has many births every day, and the I think the anesthesiologist who did mine does mainly epidurals all day, every day.
