I am not an avid fantasy book reader, but I really did enjoy His Dark Materials. I also like HP and LOTR. Since i'm pretty new to this genre, anyone got any suggestions?

These are a few suggestions that are fantasy but not heavily so:
- The Black Magician trilogy by Trudi Canavan (this is set in a world where the magicians hold the power and their order is thrown into chaos when a peasant girl is discovered to be able to wield magic).
- The Power of Five series by Anthony Horowitz (it's a fantasy book along the style of Harry Potter about a young boy who discovers he and four other children are the only ones who can protect the world from a dark force intent on invading)
- The Greenstone Grail by Amanda Hemingway (this is another book about a youngster who is born with great powers. It's more adult-focused and the second part of this trilogy has been recently released).
- The Bartimaeus Trilogy by Jonathan Stroud (this is a trilogy set in a parallel world to ours where magicians rule)
- Peter Pan in Scarlet by Geraldine McCaughrean- this is actually a very good sequel to the Peter Pan novel by JM Barrie if you enjoyed that and it's a enjoyable fantasy novel involving characters you'll be familiar with.
- The Tales of Alvin Maker by Orson Scott Card- this is a series set in an alternate America where a seventh son of a seventh son discovers he has powers.
- The Dark is Rising Sequence by Susan Cooper- this is a series about children who have the power to fight off a force of darkness.

Eragon, by Christopher Paolini and Tamora Pierce's Tortall books. they're divided into quartets: Song of the lioness, The Immortals, and Protector of the Small.

I like Mercedes Lackey. The dragon riders series is very good. It starts with Joust. Also, you might want to check out her elemental masters series.

Although the author borrows heavily from Tolkien and other authors. This series is fairly unique. In the genre, I enjoyed Terry Brooks' "Sword of Shannara" series. I would not recommend Tolkien himself. The Terry Goodkind's "Sword of Truth" series and Robert Jordan's "Wheel of Time" series are also in that genre but much longer and of a more mature nature.
If it's dragons you are fascinated with, there are several options. Patricia Wrede's dragon books are a lot of fun. I would also recommend McCaffrey's "Dragonriders of Pern" series. I'm a big fan of Barbara Hambly's "Dragonsbane" and her sequels.
Ursula K. LeGuin's "Earthsea" book are great too. She has an interesting take on dragons (I think she may have inspired Hambly).

However I would have to say my favorite would be Christopher's Paolini's Inheritance Trilogy. It was really awesome.
