Financial analysts use the financial statements of a company to make projections on what the company will do and how they will perform in the future. There are a variety of different types of financial analyst, each of which may focus on a different thing. For instance, some analysts look at companies in order to rate how the stock will perform. Other analysts look at financial statements in order to see if a company is credit worthy. But all financial analysts work with financial data in order to try to accurately predict what will happen in the future.

The title Financial Analyst is VERY broad. Most financial analysis duties will be determined by the type of company that you work for. For example I was a Financial Analyst for a company that tracked mutual fund securities. About one third of what I did was generating reports for management. The rest was deciphering other reports from other investment companies, research and data integrity. The reason why I am telling you this is to let you know that Financial Analyst is a generic title that basically means that you will be analyzing financial data. The type of data depends on the type of company that you work for and the department that you will work in. If you are working under the Director of Accounting you could be the analyzing profit & loss of the entire company.

The best thing is just to be flexible. Figures always change, so companies need capable people that can understand these variations and accurately present the findings to management. Just be prepared to be details oriented and accurate. Also, if you haven't mastered Excel it might be a good idea. This can give you an opportunity to shine (graphs and eye catching spreadsheets can make you look like a champ). Make sure that whatever you do is within the corporate culture though (that is the first thing to learn).

All the best!
