What are they releasing to compete with geforce 8800 cards? When I build a new computer I want to use the next gen of ATI.

Latest word is that it is being pushed back again, now it is looking like March. The card does look to be pretty good, but nVidia will most likely be releasing a new card at the same time to compete.

I did read/see somewhere (can't remember where) that the memory on the r600 will be running on a 512bit bus. which should destroy the 8800 GTX's 384 bit bus.

Should be launched at the end of this month, same time frame as MS Vista's release.
