Hi

This could be a HT problem (leads or plugs)

You need to check for intake leaks at the air intake trunking and the vacuum lines.

It could be a case of underfuelling due to a fault with the coolant sensor, or if it only happens once the vehicle has warmed up, the O2 sensor.

It could be the EGR valve sticking open.

There are several other options to accompany these ones.

Has the engine management light ever been on or is it on now (little orang light onthe dash with a picture of an engine on it)? If so then have the codes read out and tell us what they are. This will help us point you in the right direction.

Regards and best wishes

Geordie

Go for the easy answers first. The mechanic's suggestion is a good one to spot leaking HT. Dont change the leads on spec. measure them with an ohm meter - at a guess 5000ohms to about 20,000ohms (proportional to length).
Take a plug out and look at it and check the gap. If they are old then change them anyway.
misfiring under load is a favourite for ignition weaknesses as under load a spark is harder to produce.

The gdi engine had a fault where carbon deposits built up inside the block choking valves etc. Mitsubishi had a way of cleaning it without removing th head but most other places require head removal.
This sounds like a symptom of that problem.
