Why is it that black artists need to dye their hair blonde in order to be successful- a way to appeal to the wider market? Is this why beyonce is more successful than kelly rowland although they are equally talented???

There is a lot that determines how successful somebody is when compared to another person. Some of these things include:

Timing
Who you know/who gives you a push
What audience you're trying to appeal to
How you look
How you dress
How much you keep yourself in the media spotlight

Maybe it's just my perception, but Kelly Rowland doesn't try to keep herself in the public eye all the time like Beyonce does. I respect that of her, but I'm sure she knows the old "out of sight, out of mind" adage. It's probably her decision not to be as in-your-face as Beyonce is. Personally, I'm sick of Beyonce. Then again, I'm not a fan of that kind of crappy, pre-packaged music anyway.

Being attractive can't hurt. Being attractive is subjective as well. With direct regard for your question, 'the powers that be,' whomever they be, feel that they can package and present Beyonce to a wider audience. Putting her in movies and encouraging her to branch out on her own are part of that packaging. Being the girlfriend of a rap mogul doesn't hurt either.

I'm not sure your scenario of Beyonce vs. Kelly Rowland is a fair question, though, when so many other factors are included. Besides Kelly Rowland is just as smokin' hot as Beyonce. Sometimes it's just the way the chips fall. So many people are talented. For every Beyonce or Kelly Rowland, there's somebody waiting tables, performing on the street, or singing in the shower, that are better than the both of them. Those two just happened to get noticed.

Being attractive is certainly a huge advantage as it helps in the presentation. But the level of talent is more important. Talent is being able to sing, write, produce--the whole thing. That's who's ultimately succesful.

I think that it is necessary for most people to be attractive in the music industry because whether people like it or not your looks are important. It helps to have physical beauty in the music industry even though it does sound superficial. Of course I don't agree with any of this but it is true and their is no need to deny what is obviously happening in today's society.
