Who has had serious trouble with migraines during pregnancy and what did your doctor suggest for "home remedies" or RX medications? I have them about twice a week and seriously need help!

I am not stupid enough to take anything that is not approved by my doctor. I am simply curious about how others have dealt with the problem and the solutions their doctors have given them. If there was something I was curious about that someone suggested I would consult my doctor before use. DUH! I don't want to hurt my child.

I have migraines as well and I'm in my 20th week. I was on Topomax to prevent migraines before I got pregnant but now my doc says Tylenol, Sudafed or Caffeine only. Tylenol! That's baby aspirin to a migraine sufferer! Breath in steam through your nose, this seems to help me quite a bit, I also place pressure on the base of my skull where it meets the spinal cord. If you do this correctly it will make your headache feel worse while you do it but once you release your fingertips it will feel better. I feel for you. I've had horrible migraines all my life and only recently got to see a neurologist and get help, then I got pregnant. Go easy on the meds, I know it's hard but in the long run your baby will be heatlhier.

You can take Tylenol. You might want to try a heating pad on your neck. Caffeine can also help. Migraines do often get worse in pregnancy (hormones), so if you do turn out to be pregnant, ask your doctor about a prescription. There's lots of safe ones. Urgent care might be able to tell you if you are pregnant, but just like an at-home test, it will not be very accurate until you are actually late.

My doctor allowed me to continue my RX treatment (Zomig) after he looked into the classification of the drug. It is not proven totally safe, it came up as not fully tested in relation to pregnancy. Given that the headaches were strong enough to land me in the ER and I had them all the time, they felt the stress wasn't safe either-so my OB and my family doc said take the Zomig. Talk to your doctors and work with them-be your own advocate and tell them what other effects it has. If you just say "my head hurts" they will likely say deal with it, if you tell them "I can't function, miss work, and worry I will lose my job due to this" they will help you.
I will say that I am now getting regular chiropractic (sp?) care for them and it has really helped-wish I knew sooner. And to give you hope-I had no problems from about 5 months into the pregnancy until my son was about 7 months (I stopped breast feeding then and had to go baqck on higher dose birth control). That was when someone told me to try chiropractic care. I still have about 3 a month, but better than the 2-3 a week I had.

hormonal changes during pregnancy could be what causes the migraines if you only have them during pregnancy. my mother takes imitrex for her migraines, but she's not pregnant. it would probably be too strong to take during pregnancy. i would say you shouldn't take any medications that aren't ok'ed by the doctor while you're in your second or third trimester. for a home remedy i would say to put a cool washrag on your forhead and lay down with your feet up, or have your husband massage your head and temples. you could try to take a nap to see if it goes away also. you could drink some warm tea to try to open the sinuses in you head or do the whole "head under a towel over a steaming bowl of water" thing to try to reduce pressure in your head. hopefully your doctor ok's some form of medication. most doctors let you take children's tylonel or motrin but some don't. and i highly doubt anything like that will get rid of your migraines. good luck and i hope something works for you!

Taking advice from here for such a serious issue will be a mistake as too many people give "to their best knowledge" answers which is just as good as bad advice and most probably detrimental to the health of your unborn child.
The person to ask this question is your doctor and this is the best advice anyone can give you here.

over the counter you can buy a product called CoQ10. take it daily, headache or not...
when you have a migrane, your dr should be able to give u an RX for vicodin or lortabs, which are safre for use during pregnancy.
