We would have to achieve a miracle, which isn't going to happen. Anyone with even one working brain cell can see the futility in our being in Iraq. Only hard-core Bush supporters want to stay at this point, even some in his own party are saying it's time to get out. As for the victory part, there is none. Everyone involved has lost.

Victory in the romantic's mind would be destruction of terrorism and construction of a safe, democratic, equal government in Iraq. That government then leads to the countries around Iraq following suit.

Realistic victory would just be a stable government of any kind in Iraq and our troops being able to pull out and the country not crumbling.

I have studied military history for twenty-five years. I was a partner with White Star Consulting - a firm that successfully aided in establishing two new Civil War battlefield parks in the states of Tennessee and Mississippi (USA). My battlefield maps have appeared in two published books ("Band of Brothers" by James Fleming and "Charged With Treason" by Michael Hitt).

I believe that it is the objective of the United States and others in the U.N. coalition to aid the Iraqi People in establishing a permanent, peaceful, and sustainable government "of the People by the People and for the People." In other words, we are in for a very long term situation - comparable to Isreal, rather than Viet Nam.

Get the bad guys out of the picture so that the new Iraqi government can function and grow. Secure the boarders to that no more trouble making insurgents cross the boarders and come into Baghdad. Round up unaccounted for explosives and arms.
