Most people put the horse blankets on their horses at night and take the blankets off during the day.

It depends on how cold it is and what the horses are used too. If it's cold enough to leave them on during the day, its only gonna get colder at night(in most cases). I keep my horse's blankets off during the day, put them on at night if its really windy and/or below freezing (when I start to see the water freeze, its time for blankets!). If your concerned about safety of the horse from entanglement with the blanket--turnout blankets are made to be worn outside and normally stay put if fitted correctly even when being rolled with.

Since it is generally colder at night than it is during the day, if you are only going to blanket part of the time it should be night when you do.
If your horse wears a blanket all day you should add a second layer at night. Always take your blankets off and put them back on morning, afternoon, and evening to make sure they have not slipped around and are not causing rubs.

No. Temperatures drop at night and if you're trying to keep your horse warm, leave the blanket on. I have an 11 year old gelding who has to have a blanket on in any weather below 62 degrees because we're trying to put weight back on him and horses use energy to stay warm.

our show horses keep their blankets on all night. if you blanket your horse its winter coat will not fully grow, because it does not need to. if you take your horses blanket off at night and it is still cold your horses coat will not be able to keep him warm. though if you do not blanket your horse at all their coat begins to grow in the fall and there is no need for a blanket at all. though if you show blankets are definitely a good idea.

Keep the blanket on at night if it has a thin winter coat and it is supposed to get cold at night.

No i would leave them on all night. a sudden change in tempture could cause your horse to colic or something worse. i leave my horses blankets on 24/7 except when i'm riding.

you don't have to. If it's cold out, you might want to leave it on. Just make sure it's not too tight if the horse wants to lay down; also, not too loose so the horse won't get it tangled and twisted if it does lay down. It will survive w/o it, but it would probably be much more comfortable with it on if it's really cold out or it's exposed to drafts.
