How you know if google has penalized your website? I've heard talk about this -30 penalty. What is that and is it true? What do I look for?

If you use Google Sitemaps they have a section on indexing errors and other problems with your site. If there are any pages listed you'll know there is a problem.

Well what it doesn't do is cause you to "drop to position 30 or around there" as MR SEO said.

What Google does in response to finding hidden text on a page "is put a 30 day penalty in place for hidden text the first time". This is direct quote from the blog of Matt Cutts a Google engineer http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/communication-in-other-languages/ (about 2/3rds down the page in the comments section).

So to find out if a page has this penalty you could search in Google for info:(url of the page you think maybe penalized) and if it's not there then a -30 is a possibility.

However there are other reasons (and other penalties) that may cause a page to be unindexed so you have to investigate further to be sure.

The Google 30 penalty is when you use spammy methods to try to rank in Google. This causes you to drop to position 30 or around there. You can watch this online tutorial that will show you if you have been banned
