As times change so does technology, and how we live. It's nice to be able to contact our kids when ever we need them, and it can be a useful tool to help them become more responsible, especially if they have to pay for the time usage!! But if it's just a toy that they don't respect, and may break in the first 6 months then they are not mature enough for one yet.

times are different now and its just safer to have a way for your child to reach you or someone that can help them at all times. i recently got my 7 yr old niece a cell phone and it was the best decision i think i could have made with my mom having MS and her being there with her when i am at work if anything happens she can call me. this has already happened when my mother had an allergic reaction to a new medication she was able to call the paramedic me and my aunt i was far so my aunt beat me to my house and picked her up and they got my mother taken care of and made it through just fine.

It depends on their age first of all. Then it may be necessary for their safety. There are a ton of reasons that are vital then there are those who abuse the privilege you'll find that everywhere.
