the pregnancy bible "what to expect when you're expecting"

i also read alot of parenting magazines b/c they had stuff for me to think about post-pregnancy and during pregnancy.

also, 'the pregnancy book" is good too.

i would also recommend reading the first few chapters of "waht to expect the first year" right before you have the baby. that way you know what to expect those first months. kind of like reading an owner's manual to a really cool new toy!

take care.

EIDT:
i also read jenny mccarthy's books "belly laughs" and "baby laughs". total riots and very "real". loved both!

"What to expect when you're expecting" is, IMHO, the "Mein Kampf" of pregnancy books. Read it only if you want to get irritated at how much woolly thinking can be put between two covers.

Really, there's no one book. But my favorite was "Babies and Other Hazards of Sex: How to Make a Tiny Person in Only 9 Months, with Tools You Probably Have around the Home" by Dave Barry.

I have a stack of pregnancy books, and I have read a lot of all of them (and I really mean a stack...like almost 2 feet tall...I love reference books). So, my 2 favorites are 1. Your Pregnancy Week by Week and 2.The Pregnancy Book by Dr Sears (I love his whole line and have several others: The Birth Book, The Baby Book, and The Breastfeeding Book). Hope this helps.

Also, I wasn't really impressed with What to Expect When You are Expecting, but lots of people use it and like it.

"What to Expect When you're Expecting" is a great book. I have been reading it throughout my entire pregnancy and it has answered countless questions for me. I don't know the authors name off hand, but it shouldn't be hard to find. It goes by a month by month basis and lets you know what symptoms are normal for that month, what to expect at that month's Dr.'s appointment, what is normal, what could be a problem... It should be required reading for every pregnant woman. Good Luck :)

The girlfriends guide to Pregnancy was my favorite.....very funny and upfront. Takes you through all the fears and gross stuff like hemroids that nobody likes to talk about in a positive way. It just has a little bit of everything, I was SO glad I read it..what to expect when you're expecting is good too.....

"What to Expect When You're Expecting" is garbage.

Read the reviews on Amazon (etc), and pay attention to the negative ones. It's condescending, has a lot of bad information, frightens people unnecessarily, and has some absolute crap pretending to be supportive. Who on earth blows air into the vagina during oral sex? Who on earth has satisfied a French fry craving with baked sweet potatoes? It's poorly researched, and extremely unsupportive of things like home birth; it fails to point out all the risks and side effects of things like epidurals, fetal monitoring, and c-sections.

That said -- "The Mother of All Pregnancy Books" is basic and sane.

"The Thinking Women's Guide to a Better Birth" is excellent. Not really on pregnancy per se, but very reassuring and educational reading for the pregnant... THAT is the ONE book I wouldn't be without.

"Birthing From Within" has a lot of supporters, but is far too flaky for me. It's parading as empowerment while telling women they _will_ feel unempowered by all manner of things. It might be useful for the extremely frightened sort of mother-to-be.

"What to Expect When Your Wife is Expanding" is a bit dated, and restricted along the same lines as the real "What to Expect," but it at least amused. The "what your wife may be complaining about" sections beat the "what you may be worried about" of "What to Expect...Expecting."

What to Expect When You're Expecting. I loved the way it told me the changes going on every month. It really eased a lot of my concerns during my first pregnancy.

What To Expect When You're Expecting. I got it for about $12 at Walmart. It's very informative and helpful.

I have one on pregnancy to the first year from the Mayo Clinic. It was the best. WHat to Expect is not as good as I expected it would be.
