There are a number of animals that would be suitable for you. My first choice, given your specifications, would be a guinea pig. They are social, yet also able to entertain themselves quite well. They are smart, fun to watch, play with, and are easily potty trained. Another good choice would be a rabbit. Although they are less social, they are just as smart and cute. Hamsters also make wonderful pets, athough they are not as playful as the other two, they do become used to their human and form a bond. Even though I am fond of all animals, caged animals are definately the easiest to care for. Cats and dogs can get up to all sorts of wickedness when left at home alone and are suited for someone who is able to be home quite often. I've heard that cats are supposed to be independent, maybe they are, but my four certainly are not -- maybe they forgot to read the handbook ;-)

If you're gone from home several hours a day, for sure a Cat. If you have time to spend training a Dog, then go for a dog. Dogs are more loyal and obedient but won't poop in a litter box. Any size Poodle is good as they don't shed and are very smart.

guinea pigs are playful, don't really cost that much, don't need a lot of exercise and some are very social, (each has their own personality, so the social thing depends on the one you chose), and they are REALLY cute!!

I would say a cat, or a small mellow dog like a japanese chin or a pug. Also, a bit on the wild side, rats make great pets; I have three, they're great to watch, and they're very smart and outgoing.

A short walk isn't too much, is it? If not get an English bulldog. Dogs are a lot more work than cats, though, if you're not prepared to work with them, especially if you get it as a pup, then they are right, get a cat.
