You need to take challenging courses, preferably honors or AP, and get good grades. If your school does class rankings, you'll probably want to be in the top 25%, if not higher (maybe more like 10%). Obviously, you also need to have good scores on either the ACT or SAT. Having extracurricular activities is also a plus, whether it's a sport, a job, or volunteering somewhere. If you want some specific numbers, you can find them at the UofM website here: http://www.admissions.umich.edu/fastfacts.html .

You still have plenty of time to worry about all of this, but it does help to think ahead and plan a more challenging, college-preparatory program.

You're going to need everything colleges are looking for: a decent GPA, good SAT/ACT scores, involvement in high school, well-written entrance essays, and good recommendations from teachers that know you well. It also helps to be related to a UMich alum. You've got a few years before you need to worry about most of that, but do your best to get good grades in school and get involved in sports or clubs. It's not the hardest school to get into, but it is one of the best public schools in the nation, so you have to prove that you belong there.
