Oil shale is rock with oil in the pores of the rock. Getting it out of the ground for processing uses the sme techniques as coal, which is modified and compressed vegetable material, so the amount of rock is low, but the coal behaves the same when being dug. Oil shale has to be broken up and heated to remove the oil.
