It will be hard, but you can do it. Just keep telling yourself that you are doing it for you and your precious, helpless unborn baby. Keep trying and keep your head up. Good luck!!

Congratulations!

1 In this case, guilt is your friend.
2 Tell yourself, if need be, that you can always start again in nine months.
3 Make yourself go outside, even if it's 3am and cold, just as you would when there's an actual baby. Inconvenience is key.
4 Switch to a brand you dislike.
5 stayquit.co.uk has a free step-by-step non-nagging e-mail coaching quit program.
6 Keep cutting down. Switch to a lighter brand, and smoke as little as possible. Cold turkey is not necessarily a great idea if it's causing that much stress, and the effects of EXTREMELY light smoking are, well, extremely light.

Not saying this to be mean, because I know its different for everyone and harder for some, but the second I was holding a positive test in my hand I never smoked a cigarette again. All I had to do was think of the health of my baby and that made me quit cold turkey. You need to ask your dr about it, because I have heard that the nicotine patch or gum is no more harmful to your baby than the actually smoking is. So check with that and see if that would help you.

Ask your doctor. In my opinion, though, you're getting nicotine anyway, why not use the patch to help you quit and at least you won't have the other toxins that go along with smoking. I quit 5 years ago using the patch. I used the step down system and I was determined this time. You have an even better reason to be determined. Good luck, I know how hard it is and exactly what you're going through.

You should definately talk to your doctor. I don't know what else to say besides quit for the health of your baby. I am not sure if you can use nicotine patches or the gum while pregnant. You could chew sugarless gum or exercise to take the place of smoking. People usually need motivation to quite smoking and having a baby is about the best one I can think of. Good Luck..

I know you are trying and I"m not a smoker but I think that just the idea of what it is doing to the baby would be a huge insentive to quit. Like I said I don't smoke so I can't judge. It's great that you are making the effort. I'd ask your ob for some suggestions.

I'm not sure I know how to answer, except to say that you have to consider your health at this time - your baby can be affected.

I have heard that there is some concern with regard to the heart becoming damaged in some way and doctors warn expectant mothers about the danger to their babies' health.

Recently, a neighbour told me his lungs are black and he is suffering with several complaints at present. He is 11 years younger than I and walks like a 90 year old man. His wife who is 5 years his senior - she is 51 - looks like a 20 year old woman.
He is telling me that God must be punishing him for his sins, but he has been smoking since the age of 12.

Perhaps it is difficult for you to stop if you have been doing this for a long time, so I would suggest that you seek out some sort of program which would assist you, now!

Be very careful and God Bless!

Group Hypnosis (1 time) + Daily hypnosis/relaxation CD's + Acupressure.

Group Hypnosis: Quit smoking & drop weight ($65.00 USD). Time: 2 hours (both). They sell 5 hypnosis CD's/ tapes (15 programs for $65.00)- BUY THEM. Total cost = $130.00

Listen to the Quit Smoking Cd (20 min's.) 2-3 times/day & another suggestion like : reduce stress, improve memory, self-worth for at least 21 days.

Look up "Migun Thermal Massage" in phone book. They give FREE month trials to massage bed; which gives accupresure to get rid of tabacco cravings.

You won't have cravings, headackes, crashing (sleeping) ... in fact you'll breeze through with only the unpleasent sensation of having an overdeveloped sense of smell.

I'm at 20 weeks and it took a little while for me to quit as well. When you hear their heartbeat and see the ultrasound photos you tend to feel more guilty about it. Also, I realized I wouldn't want someone blowing cig smoke in my newborn's face and I certainly wouldn't give him a cig. when he's born so why would I ingest the chemicals into my body that he shares with me right now. Also, it has been proven that babies whose mommies smoked during pregnancy have a higher risk of SIDS and even higher if they smoke once the baby is born. Cig. smoke can damage your baby or kill him/her early on. Honestly, I just decided I couldn't live with myself if something went wrong or the baby was harmed because of my addiction. So, I guess guilt helped me the most.

try taking a bucket and putting some water and some cigarrette butts in it. when you want to smoke smell the bucket- in about a week your mind will associate that feeling with that smell and it should stop- (psychology trick) also avoid people who are smoking... and most importantly think about how bad it is for the baby when you smoke. it restricts the oxygen your baby gets which stunts the babies growth and can have severe effects on the babies respiratory system. You can do it!!!!!

Maybe you need to seek some support from your friends and family. what ever you do don't forget YOU CAN DO IT!!!!

"The Easy Way to Stop Smoking" by Allen Carr - this helped GREATLY with my quitting almost two years ago (3/29/2005) and a friend quit because of it too.

It's not condescending, it's not meant to "scare" you into quitting, it really helps strengthen your own resolve to quit on your own!

Keep at it and don't give up - I know how hard it is when ignorant people think it's so easy because they haven't ever gone through such a struggle (it always made me want to smoke MORE!!!)
