So why does it need nerve endings in order to contract?

The brain is made of expanded nerve cells which can't sense themselves.
The uterus is most closely related to skin, which has lots of nerves.

Well, the uterus needs nerve endings in order to be able to contract during menses and labor/delivery. I'm not sure I understand the question behind your question. Since the brain is the control center for everything....its function is extremely different than that of the uterus.
Hope you find the answer you're looking for.

Remember Adam and Eve and the garden and the fruit. Menstruation and childbirth and all that are divine punishment on women for Eve's sins. It wouldn't be much of a punishment if God left out the nerve endings.

Now my actual answer:

My best guess is that it's because menstruation is difficult on your body and the pain is a way to keep you from doing anything that would overtax you. Sex during that time has no procreational purpose and might be harmful somehow, so the pain might be a mechanism of discouraging that. Along the same lines, sometimes especially deep penetration is probably harmful for your reproductive system as a whole, so pain discourages that. Just my guesses. Anyway, you have my sympathy if that time of month is getting you down--pain relievers are your friend.
