No, but the RX-7 and RX-8 were NOT the only Mazdas with rotary engines. EVERY Mazda used to have a Wankel rotary engine, including the pickups. Mazda also built the Ford Courier, and most of these had the rotary, too.

Could Mazda have a HALO car...sure, but is there any money in it for them? With their Zoom Zoom marketing campaign they've already positioned themselves as a fun, progressive, sporty car manufacturer. And with cars like the RX8, MX5 Miata, Mazdaspeed 3, and the now defunct Mazdaspeed 6 they have proven they can build performance cars. As to building a rotary powered supercar. Yup, they could easily do it. They could throw a turbocharged 20B into an RX8 and have a real screamer. But it ain't likely ever to happen because there would be problems. The standard NA 2-rotor rotary doesn't get great fuel mileage, nor will it ever be able to compete in that arena as rotary's cannot be as efficient in fuel usage. If you add a 3rd rotor you mileage will become very poor and probably get hit with Gas Guzzler taxes. Add a turbo on top of that and gas mileage will be in the single digit range. Also, rotary engines are difficult to keep within emissions regulations. The new Renesis meets them but this is mainly due to the side-ports for both intake and exhaust. There is no port-overlap at all so this helps with emissions but does limit the potential HP gains available without forced-induction. Coming soon, though, is the new 1.6X rotary engine. This engine will have better HP and torque and since it's Direct Injection this should add more power while maintaining present fuel consumption/emissions. Within the sports car community both the RX8 and Miata are well known and respected. It's only the "youngin's" that just don't understand that not every car is built to be a drag race car. Both of these vehicles are looked at as "precision scalpels" in the automotive world, as opposed to the "sledge-hammer" cars. Would I complain if either car had an extra 100 HP...heck no! But I'm not worried about it. Both cars do exactly what they were designed to do. I didn't buy my 8 to street race, which is fine as it was never designed to be a red-light racer. But I can out-corner just about anything else on the road.

Mazda could, however they do not want to build a car that costs that much to insure. Read the history on the Miata and you will find that keeping inside of the horse power ratings for lower insurance rates was one reason that bigger engines were not put into the Miata. As for keeping up with the Nissan GTR, for the extra 30000 dollars (approximately) you can get the RX8 to out perform the GTR! The three rotor engine can be imported and placed in the RX8 for less then the difference. But why bother, you can find new RX8's and having to run against GTR is rather remote. Me, I will just keep my Miata's and have fun on mountain roads.

Technically although it is not a miata, the rx-8 was based on the miata platform, so in a way, it is a rotary-powered miata.
