Douglas Wilder was the first black governor of any state when he was elected as governor of Virginia. he served two terms and then after a brief Hiatus came back as the first popularly elected mayor of Richmond. He is a Democrat and well known for being fairly radical when addressing the public. Still has much popular support in richmond and virginia as a whole.
