I have a pet rat, that I want to show in 4-H. But there's no rat section. There is, however, a cavy section. So are rats a type of cavy?

Our Pet Rats are Rattus Norvegicus. They are not related to Cavies, which are commonly known as Guinea Pigs. Their only relationship is that they are both Rodents.

I'm betting that there is no rat catagory because 4-H has everything to do with farming and farmers hate rats.

Stand up for your favorite pet and get them to add a catagory for your rat.

a cavy/cavie, is actually a guinea pig~the scientific name anyway.
Maybe try to find out the scientific name of rats and see if there is section under that name.

No, but our local 4-H set up a new catagory a couple of years ago called 'cage critters' or something like that for all the little pets that kids wanted to show. Rats, gerbils, hamsters and other furry things. I'd suggest getting ahold of your 4-H extension office and asking them if they have any guidelines for setting up a new animal section. They can probably tell you when the small animal commity has meetings and you can propose it there to be voted in. Good luck there are probably a lot of kids who'd appreciate a new class for their pets

No, cavy is the scientific name for guinea pigs.rry, but you can still do 4-H if you can keep a guinea pig, they are cute, social, don't cost much, and are cute. What state are you in???

for my section, i does no longer get a rabbit, because it truly is totally puzzling to discover one which could help you cuddle it, without jumping out of your hands on the first possibility it receives. in case your mom and father don't love rats, then i does no longer get them, in user-friendly words for the very incontrovertible reality that they are going to be residing with them too, so it truly is in reality honest you're taking their pastimes into interest. A guinea pig makes a outstanding puppy. They adore being cuddled, and they bond with you so without delay, you'll in no way opt for it to go away your part! it truly is uncommon for a guinea pig to really chew, and it truly is fairly common education them now to not poo everywhere, even as they quite do poo, which isn't that many times. i imagine this 'pal' of yours desires to provide up undesirable-mouthing those outstanding animals!
