Why do you think it doesn't protect your computer? Has it found a virus and if so, have you deleted it? If it found a virus, then it's doing what it's supposed to do. If you have spyware, then that's not what an antivirus is designed to find and eliminate. Your question does not really state why you think your antivirus isn't protecting your computer.

Did you download and install the software from your ISP's website? If you didn't do that, you're not protected.
