....children may learn cursive from the very start of schooling. when i taught Kindergarten at a Christian school using the ABEKA program , i taught cursive to 5 year olds. " this is how you read it , this is how you write it" . the children learned the different symbols we use for both print and cursive at the same time. they excelled with this.
at first i wasn't feeling positive about this curricullum , but after teaching it this way..it made a lot of sense to me and proved easier and succesful.

Usually by third grade your child should start to write cursive. However, many states do not require that it is taught. I teach fourth grade and many of my students can not write in cursive. My goal is that they can all sign their name in cursive. It's sad that it is not taught like it used to be but I can understand with everything else that is going on in the schools why it is missed. My advice to parents is to ask the teachers to send home practice worksheets that the students can use especially if they have bad handwriting. I do this with manuscript as well for my students with poor handwriting. Also, downloading practice sheets can be found on line and used at home by the students. Good Luck!

Children usually start in the second grade. In kindergarten they learn to write the letters. In first grade they learn to write stories and to use their handwriting for activities other then just writing them over and over. In second grade they're ready for a new challenge - cursive!

I am 17 years old and a Junior in high school that takes pride in his education. I am an active member of Forensics, Student Council, Junior Achievements, and president of my local FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America). This Spring I will be making a run for Wisconsin State President of FBLA. I am a registered, card carrying Republican and was very active in this past election. Even though I am not a legal adult I hope you see me fit to anwer your question. First of all I would like to figure out what led you to such an ignorant conclusion of our educational system. High school is meant to prepare students for the workplace or further education not provide parenting. That is what parents are for. So to say we need kids writing in cursive for punishment obviously shows a lack of confidence in parents. Schools should teach, parents should parent. Schools should never waste time disciplining kids; thats a waste of instructional time and taxpayers dollars. Technology "dumbing down" education?? Its not the technology "dumbing down" education, its the teachers that have been around since WWII that refuse to become acquainted with it. Just the other day I had to sit down with a teacher and explain to him how to attach files to an e-mail!!!! And now taxpayers are paying this man 40,000 a year to stand in front of a class of adolescents when he is the one getting the education! I can learn more it ten minutes on a computer than any teacher could teach me in an hour. If that technology is there why not use it!?! You need some sort of technological experience for most occupations anyway! -----Well nowdays its the kids that use words like "lavatory" that get their heads flushed in the toilet. Intelligence has no connection with a lack of a social life. I start on the varsity basketball team and I have had many girlfriends. Normally I would simply overlook questions of such an immature, ignorant nature but I simply could not resist this one.

This depends on the state. You can usually find their curriculum guides online on their Dept of Ed websites.

On a side note, as a high school English Language Development teacher, I probably should be teaching cursive, (especially to students who don't use the same alphabet in their home language) but I seem to be busy teaching the other parts of English .

I remember being taught how to write in cursive in second grade. I wouldn't imagine that they would start teaching it any sooner than that. A child's fine motor skills is just getting developed by then.
