Who gives a shyte whether some 19 year old supermodel thinks that global warming is a problem or some barely literate boxer switches faiths. Turn off your godddamn TV and read a frigging book written by an expert.

Here's a news flash. You don't know celebrities and they don't know you. Moreover, since they have never seen your face, they don't even care about you. Why do you care about them....because humans evolved to care about people whose faces they recognize....This behavioral legacy is pretty useless in the 21st century.

First of all you can change your question , because not all Americans are fixated on celebs...for example myself, and many other people I know. And even if people are , what is it your concern? is it hurting you ?? no!! If you don't want to watch tv then you pick up a book!! You act like only Americans care about people with faces they recognize, all countries are the same. so get over it and move on!!!!!!

Its quite disturbing isn't it. The worst thing of all is that people do give a shyte what they say and do as if they know better than other people. The reality is that more often than not these celebrities are so far removed from a 'normal' lifestyle their views are completely scewed on the world as a whole; thus anything specific uttered from their lips has no relevance to the average person. Usually they are only championing a cause (whatever it is) because their lives are so shallow and empty they simply need to feel some like they're doing something meaningful. People soak it up however, like they are educated and knowledgable on the subjects they preach from their soap box thrones. Disgustipating!

We used to have royalty. All we got left is Prince this and that.
Every society needs these figures.
And every society needs a bunch of people they can talk about, even with a stranger in the airport.
And gossip has its redeeming qualities.
Our little kids what to and not to do.
Donate to charity (angelina, oprah, etc.)
Reject the hegemony (Bassinger, Baldwin, if you agree).
They get people talking about real personal and global issues.
They get us to make our social rules.
Without necessarily having to talk about our own neighbors (like we'll ever really stop... but I do my best to speak with compassion, not with judgment. Leave judgment for the celebs; it's safer.)

Agreed. We pay these people millions of $$$--give them free stuff-- and the people who are doing real work--firemen/women, EMT's, child care workers, teachers, etc.. barely make a living wage. It's sick. Paris Hilton is vacuous and disrespectful of the basic rules of society--and yet she is deified. People--get your priorities in order! Leonardo deCaprio didn't go to school to study science and Tom Cruise knows as much about postpartum depression as Elton John.

It is useless but it's entertainment. American's deserve entertainment and celebrities are just one form. TV has a lot more going on then just celebrites. Change the channel. Try history channel, travel channel, HGTV, etc.

I totally agree with you, but there are a lot of people whose faces you don't see who are making a lot of money off the people whose faces you do see. So PUT DOWN THE NATIONAL ENQIRER and make a life for yourself!!

it's because our lives are boring and we need a more interesting life to fixate on and we feel we need more friends even if they don't care about us
