For starters, had your question been proofread it would have been different: "what are the importance of proofreading?" should be changed to "what is the importance of proofreading?"
Proofreading allows you to clarify ambiguities in a written work, fix spelling and grammatical answers, and add or remove certain elements. It will make your written work better mechanically, which is a good thing because it strengthens your argument or purpose. For example, imagine being a teacher and receiving two papers; both of these papers have basically the same content, but one has spelling and grammatical errors and doesn't flow as well as the other. Obviously, you would favor the paper that had been proofread as it presents a more cohesive and educated argument.
Hope that helped

The importance of proofreading is that it keeps a written report/paper from seeming unprofessional (for when you graduate and are going to start your career). Most jobs that offer good pay require you to turn in a resume, which is a written representation of you. If there are misspelled words and improper grammar, and the person who reviews it notices, it might cause you to not get the interview for the job in the first place. In a oral report, proofreading is important because your speech needs to sound professional when you present it to a group. These are only a couple of reasons why proofreading is important, not all of the reasons.

You should proofread so you catch mistakes like the one in your question. It should read: "What IS the importance of proofreading" not "What ARE..."
Proofreading also helps you think of your audience. You can edit for tone and content.
The obvious reason for proofreading is so you'll get a better grade on your paper. If you catch and correct mistakes, your chances of a higher grade increase quite a bit.

to check spelling so you do not look stupid and to add anything you forgot. Also to check if you are using the right verb, like the sentence "What is the importance of proofreading."

The importance is to keep from making errors such as you made. The question should say, "What is the importance of proofreading?"

The importance of proof reading is to verify that you have used proper grammar and have not made any spelling or punctuation errors. If you are going to be handing this "work" in to someone, a teacher, an editor, or employer, if looks REALY (that might be spelled wrong) bad for you, and it shows that you do not take time and care with your work, and that may translate into other aspects of your personality.
This is just my opinion. Ciao!!

To help find mistakes that you have missed. Also to see if other people can understand what you are trying to put into words (just b/c you can understand yourself doesn't mean others can) Plus it helps to get a second opinion.
