Well, I've seen lots of comments about it being comon knowledge that you can die from drinking too much water. Okay, but it isn't. Or at least wasn't. There was an interview of some sports doctor on NPR a month or so ago and he was lamenting how few people were aware of this. It seemed to be his opinion that more people needed to be aware of it.

I'd say this incident illustrates his point.

So, this lady probably didn't realize what the risks were.

And water is supposed to be good for you.

And many of us have felt sick from having eaten a bit too much. None of us think it's serious. So I'm sure she chalked it up to that.

But, the radio station needed to do more research. While it isn't common knowledge, water intoxication is not a mysterious or unknown problem. A few hours of research would have brought several cases of this problem to light.

Then there was the nurse who called in to warn the DJ's about the dangers. Apparently, the contestants never got to hear her or anyone else calling in with warnings. The DJ's, in fact, made light of the dangers and laughed it off as "not being their fault" since the contestants had signed waivers.

This woman's judgement had become impaired when she started to get sick. That's one of the first symtoms of water intoxication. There are a number of people who should have thought to make here stop when it became clear she was getting sick. The other contestants wouldn't be on that list since they were likely as messed up as she was (or nearly so).

Nothing more complicated than some salt pills might have saved this woman's life. Heck, just stopping everyone after 16 ounces of water would have made this contest safer. The point was to drink the water and not have to urinate.

And really, contests where you're playing with people's health are little over the top. But if you must have such a contest, you really should have medical personnel on hand in case something goes wrong.

The people running this contest did so many things wrong it's kind of staggering.

Ten people associated with the show have been fired and probably will not be able to get a job in radio again. This seems to me to be a light punishment for their role in this woman's death.

for sure there are themes of height, weight and body mass, so "2 gallons" isn't a consistent neither is the time.... yet, convinced, frequently too a lot water too straight away can bring about a fatality. The above answer on hyponatremia is an staggering position to start up getting to understand. a healthcare professional might want to likely grant you with a good estimate on the quantity of water for someone your length

I think it is horrible really. I was listening to the show that morning. Go to sac news and it will tell more about it on CBS 13 I think. People were calling and saying it was dangerous and the DJs said that the people signed waivers so they didn't care.

Oh yeah... wee for a wii. Can you believe that she only drank a gallon? But, I can't imagine how long she actually held it for. It's weird to think that there actually is such a thing as water poisoning.

i'm sorry for her and her family. she obviously didn't know drinking too much water could be lethal. the radio program should have known better and should have warned the listeners about the dangers of drinking too much water. it is not something that is general knowledge.

Howard Stern must be thanking the God he doesn't believe in that it didn't happen on his show. He had the exact same contest several months ago.

Oh, you talking about the Wee for a Wii contest eh??

Personally, I think the lady was an idiot. And, I think the people who were fired deserved to be - they should have researched it first. I knew you could kill yourself drinking too mych water...

Well anyone with a brain knows that you can die from that! I think all stunts should be checked and rechecked before they are attempted and the People who put on the show should be held accountable.
