Hey, so I'm in a delema... I'm from MI and last summer I worked in AK. I was a musher/guide on a glacier there. I found the position lat yr online and was going crazy to be apart of it. Any ways I ended up working there fo rthe season 4 months. I got great pay and met some of the most interesting people I have ever met. I really want to go back to see my friends. The quesiton is should I go back..... I'm really struggling firguring it out. Here are the pros and cons
PROS:
great pay- great friends- learning experiance- landscape is sweet and good for my photography- best commute to work ever (heli)
-long hours (sometimes over 100 a week)
CONS: Sunburn (had ot go to the ER last summer)- lost feeling in my toes lol (got it back a month after work ended)- HARD days (weather, evil tourists, hard management)- had to melt snow to shower and then take a bath with buckets- had to sleep on glacier- weathered up (longest 21 days)- will be my 21st and its a"dry glacier"

I was thinking this summer I would try a different job. Perhaps a wrangler in Ireland. Some thing different, some where new....
Should I continue working where I have or should I get a new job...

You've already done it so now go on and try something else. You got the memories, wether good or bad they're still memories that you'll never forget. Now go out and create some new ones.

To be honest, all your CONS don't look that bad. Now that you've had the 'learning experience' of the job, do you have ways to prevent the sunburn & lost feeling in your toes? Have you used the knowledge you gained to create new ways of dealing with the challenges and making the experience better for everyone, evil tourists included?

You seemed to really love it and 'want' to do it again. I say do it again. Go back as the experienced 'pro'. Use what you learned last year to make it even better. Bring management some snow cones, show the evil tourists your smile and give the glacier a big kiss! Take more photos & work on publishing a blog and/or a photo book or contribute them to the company marketing campaign. Journal everything! Create some really cool Christmas cards for next year (or sell them ... Extreme Christmas Cards!).

Like the slogan says ... just DO it!

Pack some sunscreen, read a guide on cold weather hiking (to avoid frostbite), understand that there's going to be evil asshats everywhere you work and go back!!

Doing this will build character and be the adventure of a lifetime every time you go back.

You'll eventually learn to adapt and will look forward to making the trip every year. Besides, our glaciers aren't going to be around for too much longer....appreciate them while you can and upon coming back, be an advocate for the end to global warming by showing pictures.

GO FOR IT!!

Find a different job and continue to build those relationships that you have established by visiting and calling. Arrange get togethers at a neutral site. Plan vacations together.

I say go back. You are young. Live life to the fullest. Alaska is the last american frontier and an adventure. Go for it! I envy you.
