I was told that sperm can live 3-5 days. Sometimes 7. But doesn't the 7 days have to be "good" conditions? Such as the time before you are fertile?
I was also told the longer the sperm stays in you the more they die. Because let's say by day 7 most of them have died already. Right?

The sperm that comes from days 1-5 I was told is very determined. By days 6 and 7 they aren't as determined.

The life of the sperm has nothing to do with when you're fertile. It has to do with the health of the sperm, the health of the semen, your particular pH, and factors like that.
Generally sperm have a 72 hour max in your body... but in rare cases a woman with no sex for a long time ended up pregnant from some persistant sperm that lasted longer.

Who really knows how long they can live? I always hear (through doctors, etc.) that the typical sperm life is around 3-5 days, but in certain instances and conditions can live for up to a week to impregnate a woman. This is rare, but it definitely can happen.
As for answers about the acidity of a vagina...well, that's true to a degree. But once the ones that keep on swimming make it further, they are able to live within a MUCH more hospitable environment, without the vaginal acidity. This is beyond the cervix and in the fallopian tubes. There, they hang around in great conditions and wait for an egg to fertilize, and they can last a lot longer.
But yes, I'm sure that by day 7, whether inside or outside of the vagina, most of them have died.

Healthy sperm can survive in pefect conditions as long as 10 days inside a woman's body. The norm is usually 6 -7 days.
It is true that most of the sperm will have died by day 7, but some will still survive. It only takes 1 sperm to get pregnant. Men ejaculate millions at a time.

Regardless of what "time" it is in the woman's cycle, the female reproductive tract is a hostile place for sperm. It's true that on average sperm live 3-5 days but there are always exceptions. However older sperm are not as motile and can possibly be defective in some way. If you're trying to conceive it's best to time things so that you'll get the freshest sperm available to the egg.

Meredith is right. The reason men's balls (sperm makers) are outside the body is because of the temperature. It's too hot for them inside, so they have their own little pouch to keep them a couple degrees cooler than the rest of the body. Sperm only survive in a woman about 2-3 days before dying of heat. It has nothing to do with your cycle.
This is also why men with low sperm count are encouraged to ditch the tighty-whities and get boxers.

Heat can kill sperm so I really don't think sperm would live longer than 3 days because your insides are hot!! But you never know -- it really only takes 1 sperm to get pregnant and there might just be 1 pesky little sperm who finds a hiding place and waits until just the right second. I really don't think anyone knows -- doctors, scientists, lab techs included -- God's will???

There may still be some alive by day 7, but it's not too likely that you'll get pregnant from it. It would have to be just the right conditions. The acidity of your vagina kills most of them off by then. You're right, they're most strong and active in the first few days.
