Does anyone know what that paper (origami style) game was called, where after folding, we could slip our fingers into the 'pockets'...?
Am finding this tricky to describe, I must say... The main gist of it was; upon folding this "thing" there would be four surfaces where we would write or scribble the actual colour on with a crayon or whatever etc. Once you had created this wonderful "thing" you could approach your buddies and first ask them " which colour do you choose?" then you would spell out the colour, at the same time, with your fingers opening and shutting this "thing" Next, after the spelling, a number would be exposed, to which would be asked"which number do you choose? Then you could open up a flap to reveal a particularly poignant adage , along the lines of,,, Ink pink, you stink! Or, You eat worms! you know, really "deep" stuff. What are they called and if you know what I'm talking about,,,what did you write in yours???

I made them at school and now my kids do too!! Great fun but the name escapes me. Hmmm....can hardly remember wha I wrote! Probably things like 'you fancy...' who ever happened to be the popular boy in the class (or the not so popular!) or 'you smell' - yeah, really deep and meaningful! Going to be annoyed now till I find out!
Back again! Just looked in my son's book of origami and couldn't find it so asked him if he knew and he says they call them fortune tellers, but whether that's what they were called all those years ago is anyone's guess!

Great question: I well remember it, but our brand of 'hoops' was much, much better: read on:
The Hoops Season.
It’s hard to think, for the modern child,
When we were young, what drove us wild.
For computers and those mobile phones,
Are never likely to break bones.
Each year, just as the seasons came,
We boys would play a certain game,
The one that I will tell you true,
Is Hoops, and what we used to do.
A bicycle wheel with the tyre removed,
Was not so bad and so it proved,
A car tyre – never big enough,
But a lorry wheel – now that’s the stuff.
Hoops was what we called the game,
And often ended with great pain,
For when the lorry tyre we’d use,
An unlucky lad we had to choose.
Up the hill, higher and higher
We’d roll the lad, inside the tyre,
Then with a push the mighty load,
Gathered speed towards the road.
Cars were fewer at that time,
So things were looking pretty fine,
Until the wall at the hill’s end,
Came much too soon before the bend.
Each lad, he had to take his turn,
And with each run, he had to learn,
How to make the tyre brake,
Before he reached the road and gate.
‘Till blood was drawn, or bones were broke,
We treated this game as a joke,
But then we’d tremble with great fear,
And stop the nonsense for another year.
Some more trips down memory lane in my 360 blog. Thanks...

Yeah we had them as well. Choose a number open it and do what is written. My 9 year old niece came home from school the other day with one. Sorry I too have forgotten the name of it. Marbles was big then as was cards from sweet cigarette box's and conkers were more popular then. Some things will live on forever. I hope you find the name of the game you seek.

Good description! We used to call them Cootie Catchers and used them to "tell fortunes" kind of like a magic 8 ball, but in a way that requires actual dexterity. I still remember how to make them and they'll always be an important part of my childhood. If you picked Pink and 2 it would always say "you're in love". Have a wonderful day!

Cootie Catchers, My mom used to make them for me. They aren't origami. My mom said they became real popular when she was in grade school in the 1940's. Thanks for the "trip down memory lane"
