We’ve never been shown an ‘origin story’ for him, just as a lot of other toons’ have never revealed their childhood (Daffy, Bugs, Porky and all the rest.) It would surely be interesting to see how Bob got to the bottom of the ocean in the first place, since—as you can tell, just by LOOKING at him—he’s NOT a natural sponge, but a SYNTHETIC CELLULOSE KITCHEN SPONGE! He doesn’t belong on the sea floor, he belongs in someone’s sink! Maybe someday they’ll show how he accidentally got sucked down the drain and wound up going through the sewers until he reached the ocean, just like in Finding Nemo.
