We've had quite a bit of snow/ice lately, and I've got this guilty feeling that I should shovel my driveway. But at the same time, I really don't mind driving on the unshoveled driveway and we never really have any need to walk on it in the winter.

I thought about the possibility of ice causing damage to the concrete, but our concrete is already in really bad shape and needs replaced, so we wouldn't be preserving its pristine condition or anything.

So why DO people clear their driveways? And should I clear mine?

If you are not worried about driving or walking on it, than there is really no reason to shovel it.

Well you said you had quite a bit of snow if the snow is deep enouph to touch the underside of your car I would shovel it. Even if your car goes through the snow the snow can damage the parts under your car such as air deflectors which are made of plastic and can break easily especially in the cold and just because they are plastic doesn't mean they don't cost hundreds of dollard to replace. Some of these plastic air deflectors don't just save gas milage but are needed to help cool the car when hot weather rolls around.
Also traction can become poor and you might find yourself unable to stop either coming in or out of the driveway.
and then there is the possibility that someone like a water or electric meter person or just anyone who might come to your house could slip and sue you.

**** Attracts Females (or existing females) ****

1. Good exercise - Attracting Females 4 u.

2. Shows that you're more than a lazy Sloth - making u look good to the women..

3. Protects your property; concrete, foundation, water for lawn: makes you look sucessful to women.

4. May save your life in tragedy like fire, heart attack, stroke, disgruntled spouse or kids, water pipe breakage: Men & women would laugh at you if you could not get out of house during water break because you didn't shovel and you became a frozen D Duff statue (Giggle).

5. In deep snow (1 foot or more) it gives you a feeling that you're not trapped in a cabin with no way out ... a shoveled driveway & sidewalk give psychological relief to cabin fever. Women like psychologically secure men.

6. Your car will be happy - Well, we all know about cars & women.

7. Keeps car from dragging snow into garage >>>> keeping you from dragging excess snow into house >>>>> keeping you from mopping and vacuuming all the time ... which the females do, and if they're always doing, they get miffed major - or if just getting to know you ... they'd have nightmares about the future of living with dirty floors.

No. If I lived in an area the place it snowed and you asked to shovel my driveway, i could be greater advantageous than satisfied to pay you a respectable salary to do it, and ask you to come back back next time it needed to be cleared.

I think they generally clear them for aesthetic purposes - to keep their property looking nice. Same as mowing lawns I suppose.

The damage to the concrete will be negligible, as the damage would occur the moment the ice freezes. Leaving it there will create little extra problems.

The only downside I can think of is it might be harder to stop in an emergency - say a child runs out behind you....

Something you might consider is that other people might have a need to walk on your driveway and shoveling it might keep them from injuring themselves on your property which could save you on legal problems.

I think they shovel it to give themselves a sense of control over weather and a false sense of security that they can "escape" if necessary. As long as I can drive in and out, why not let nature take care of its self is my philosphy...lol...saves muscle aches too

NO, you dont have too. If you don't mind driving over it, Go for it. Me personally I hate to shovel, so if I don't have too, thats great.
