I recently discovered, accidentally, that my wife has a secret bank account with several thousands of dollars in it. I confronted her about it and she said it was in case we ever got divorced. Is it time to finally leave her or what? Do you all think it was wrong for her to hide money from me or am I crazy?

Does she share in the bills in accordance with her income? Is she following the rules the two of you decided upon together for handling your finances as a married couple? If so, it shouldn't matter what she does with her money. What you're saying is that you will consider divorce for just about anything you don't like; what she is saying is that she understands exactly that to be your personality and is taking appropriate precautions.

Hiding money from the court during divorce is illegal. It is perjury to file an affidavit stating asset and not list all assets and their disposition.

It is wrong for her to do this, and it is time to start your financial planning for separation. Get yourself separate accounts, and separate credit cards and close all joint accounts. You do not need her permission to close joint accounts. Stop paying any overage to principal on your house. Any medical or dental work, or any home or car repairs you have been putting off should be done now so that they come out of joint asset. When you get yourself in a firm financial situation then you can decide whether or not you should separate, but never mix your finances again or you will surely end up divorced because of trust issues. She has betrayed your trust.

She's right. And you should have a seperate bank account with your own money in it. And credit cards she doesn't have access to. Ask a divorce lawyer about spouses cleaning out accounts and cancelling credit and debit cards while the other spouse is away on business or vacation leaving them with no money or credit. Heck I no a guy who was in the Army Reserve he was away at annual training when his wife cleaned him out and filed for divorce.

You're crazy to be surprised by this.

It may not be wrong, but it doesn't help your future financial status. If she has a spending problem, help her learn how to live on a budget. In the long run, if she can learn to be more frugal, you will have a better relationsip as well as finances because the two of you helped one another. Marriage should be a team effort, not just one person running the show and the other on clean up detail.

She may be hiding it from you now, but when it comes to a divorce it is illegal for her to hide it.
In most juristictions, your assets are consider joint. She may have been squirreling the money away but she has no right to keep it from you if you divorce.

I personally think anyone who's hiding thousands of dollars from their spouse "in case" of divorce was already planning something, personally......

If she is putting that much away "just in case" of a divorce then that is where you guys are heading... sounds like some major trust and security issues going on...

Not right but not worth divorcing her either..
She is either insecure or she is planning on leaving you...
Go ahead and let her keep an account with a few thousand
in it if it makes her feel better...

Yes, that is very wrong. Unless, you are a unresponsible jackass that cant control your spending, there is no reason she should have done that.

Hey, how did you find out?
