how much college education do you need to become a psychologist

You need a PhD.

You can get a bachelor's in anything, though you should take at least a couple basic psych classes.

Then get your masters in psych, usually focusing on a particular field (like experiment, clinical, developmental, etc).

Then you move on to PhD work, focusing on your particular area.

From year one of undergrad, to getting your PhD can be no less than 7 years. And that would be extremely fast. 9 years is about average.

A Psychologist requires at least a Master's Degree in Psychology. However, many earn their Ph.D. so they can use the title Doctor. Otherwise, you can call yourself a therapist, but not doctor.

And FYI, some earn their M.D. (Medical Doctor's degree) so they can prescribe medications. That's the difference between a Psychiatrist (goes to med school) vs. a Psychologist (who doesn't go to med school).
