my son would not latch on so I pump exclusively. He is 7 months old today and has had only breastmilk. I have a Medela Pump in Style and I highly recommend it. It is very easy for traveling, everything fits in the carrying case which looks like a big purse.. I tried the Ameda pump first and for me, they did not even compare. The medela is definately the way to go. I would suggest maybe renting one for the first month to see if it will even work for you. I am using a friends that she used one time. She wanted to breastfeed but hated it and could not stand pumping when she tried it. Also, another one of my friends could breastfeed, but when she tried to pump she could only get about 1/2 ounce total ... it just did not work for her. Why spend the $ if it may not work for you. Just a thought. Good luck!

Medela pump in style! It is a double pump. It can be electric, battery powered or you can buy the adapter to plug into the cigarette lighter in the car. You can also adjust the speed and strength of sucking. I bought adapters so I could pump directly into my favorite Avent bottles.
This is a great option if you will pump regularly at work after maternity leave or if you want the best pump out there without buying hospital grade. If you will only pump occasionally, a manual is less expensive and will do fine. They can be ~$50 as opposed ot the Medela-$250 and up.

The Avent worked with my first one. Got rid of it (6 1/2 yr gap between babies). Bought a Medela for the 2nd and would not work for me. But Medela are highly recommended. If I have another baby I will get another Avent.

Okay, I have used both the Advent manual hand pump and the Medela hospital electric double pump and the hospital one was the best! The Advent one worked somewhat but when my breasts were engorged it was impossible to use and I couldn't manually express any milk to make it easier. I was loaned the hospital pump and only had to buy the accessory kit (approx. $50 cdn), which included the breast attachments and bottles (for obvious sanitary reasons I assume). The electric one worked fast and really expressed down to the last drop! lol. Anyways if you can get a good electic one, go for it, and try to get a double pump if possible, it will save you much needed time.

It depends on how much pumping you plan on doing, and how much money you want to spend. If you have to go back to work full time and still want to feed baby breastmilk exclusively, then you should invest in a high-end, electric pump. If you'll be staying home and only giving baby an occasion bottle or need to pump to add breastmilk to baby's cereal, etc then I would suggest a manual pump. I used the Avent Isis, too. I had bought/borrowed several brands, types of pumps until I found this one, which worked the best for me.

Medela! Worth every penny.
I've had mine for six years and started using it with #2 this summer. It's made a move of over 1000 miles and was in a 90+ degree attic for two years- still works like a charm!
The Pump in Style, if they still make that one.

When I was breastfeeding, I used an automatic, plug-in Medela brand pump. It was amazing! I kind of felt like a milk cow most of the time, but once your milk really comes it, it helps a lot with the process. I could get done is less than 10 minutes. It also lets your husband or significant other get rid of a few laughs.

Lactation consultants are going to recommend Medela. My lactation consultant said her second favorite was Avent. I have had to use my Medela pump off and on and I don't like it much. For everyday use I LOVE my Avent Isis manual pump...very comfortable!!

i had horrible luck with breast pumps...i bought my first one from walmart i think it was evenflo and it quit working 2 weeks later, my son couldn't latch on and of course it broke at like midnight and i had to go get another one in the middle of the night and i got the avent manual one thinking it would be better cause the pump couldn't burn out....well theres little tiny parts that have to be on just right and if theres too much suction it will get sucked into the bottle of milk and its a big pain having to stop and get it back out and put it all back together again. then i got a medela from babies r us and it was great, i would have loved the hospital grade one but after i had already invested so much into ones that quit working i decided i wasn't spending anymore on breast pumps.
after i quit breastfeeding i heard that if you breastfeed exclusively that wic will give you one of the hospital grade ones but only if you are going back to work full time and some places will also rent them. hope i helped some..good luck!
