You may lose your mucous plug in tiny little bits so that you don't even notice it.

Your water doesn't have to break for you to be in active labor. With my first, my water stayed intact through about 16 hours of labor before I consented to AROM at about 7 cm, which kicked me into transition. With my second and third, my water didn't break until I was pushing. If you have a lot of vitamin C in your diet you'll grow a strong bag of water. This is GOOD because laboring with your bag of water intact is EASIER since there isn't as much intense pressure on your cervix.

Some babies are even born in the caul, meaning the bag of water stays intact and the caregiver has to break it to get to the baby after the birth. This is considered a good luck sign.

I have had 3 babys and Im pregnant with our 4th and I have never seen a mucous plug, and have only had my water break on its own once. So yeah you can go into labor without having either one of those things happen. I was in labor for 12 hours with my first and they had to break my water. Same with my 2nd baby. With my 3rd son, I started to feel contractions all day long, but it was very light, then my water broke several hours later and the contractions became terrible.

Yes you can start contractions without losing mucus plug or water breaking. I stopped dilating at 1 cm but had bad contractions. Once i got to the hospital they gave me something to speed up labor. After i had an Epidural around 3 cm they broke my water, it really speeds up labor and makes contractions much worse.
I saw the answer about the women having the baby with out he water breaking. (I think she was making it up)!! They have to break your water so the baby comes down into the birth canal to be delivered.

Oh yea, but normally the mucous plug comes first. Maybe in the shower or bath tub and you may not have noticed it. When ever it happens I wish the best. And remember to have a warm water bottle after you have the baby and you go potty the first time. No one ever tells you that, Whether you rip, tear, or you get cut, use the water bottle

Yes you can, it just might be the beginning of labor for you. After the mucous plug discharge they might want to admit you. You're probably dilating now, your water might break if not they will have to do it.That's when the hard labor pains begin.Sometimes it doesn't happen in that order so be prepared for anything!!
