The Soviet Union, previously the Russian empire, had grown by force, absorbing other lands, countries, and peoples by conquest. The empire strived to create among the different ethnias and peoples that composed the country a single idea of belonging to the empire, but since forced things in the long run don't work, as soon as Mikhail Gorbachev relaxed the iron fist, all the different peoples began to crave their independence and suzerainty.
As Mahatma Gandhi said once about India: "We prefer our bad government to the good foreign rule."
The situation became so critical that the Russian government refused Chechnya to separate as well, or the country would totally fraction
It was not an isolated case.
The only case where there was unification was in Germany, where people from both sides kept their idea of being a single people

As has been mentioned, the Soviet Union was made up of different republics. Some of these republics, like the three Baltic states (Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania) were on the road to independence already before the USSR dissolved in 1991. Other republics like the Central Asian republics were not really ready for independence.

The Soviet Union was not really a country, just like the United States. It was a federation of seperate and independent states that formed an economic and political union in the name of stability and fiscal growth.
The central government of the USSR dissolved leaving the state governments final power over their own territories.
It would be just like Washington DC going away leaving the states' governors as effective presidents of their states.

Those so called leaders of "Equality"communism were themseles living luxurious life, they were living in Kremlin for god sake, with a life style no less then kings..
+They were brutal, and there was no one to question them, apparently Afghanistan was the last straw that broke camel's back..
