In the wild, hamsters live in underground burrows. Although we keep them in cages, it doesn't necessarily mean that this instinct is lost to them. What your hamster is trying to do is create a burrow. The rest of the cage is the "wild" and the bedroom is his "burrow". Just as we close our front door to the outside world, he is closing his, by packing the entrance to his burrow with bedding. They do this to keep themselves safe from predators, etc. I wouldn't be too worried about his bathroom behavior. His bedroom is where he feels most comfortable and as long as you clean it out every few days, there shouldn't be a problem. The best way I've found to get a hamster to use a certain area for the bathroom is to fill a dish with fine sand. He'll roll around in it to have a dust bath and then use it as a potty. Just dump it out every few days and you'll have a clean cage and hammy.
I'm not sure what you're using for bedding, but please be sure to avoid the "fluffy" bedding they make for hamsters. It's the stuff in small bags that can be found in pet stores. This fluff is actually fatal to hamsters if swallowed. The best stuff to use is unscented, white, toilet paper. They will happily shred it to make the perfect nest and if they do swallow the toilet paper, it dissolves in their stomach.
Best of luck with your little critter.

Maybe he's stuffing the tube - trying to get the bedding out of the "bedroom" because it's too soiled? Try changing the bedding more often. It may also be that he's trying to keep warm. Try moving his cage into a warmer area of the house.
If he wants to get out, he can...he is fully capable of pulling it out again if he needs to.
It's not unusual for him to use part of his bedroom as a bathroom as well. If there is room, put a small litter box in the corner he uses to potty.

he id doing that to stay warm. When he cloggs it up, it builds up an air pocket in the room and his body heat heats up the room. perfectly normal. the bathroom thing, i dont know about that, but i dont see anything wrong with it.

mine does too, i think it reminds them of burrowing underground, as they did in the wild, like a protective wall around them and their food.
