In a nutshell, Alberta is going through an intense economic boom... probably the most frenzied boom anywhere in North America for the last 50 years.

There are plenty of jobs, but there is a big price: the two major cities, Calgary and Edmonton, are congested and rents for apartments and prices of houses have skyrocketed in the last three years.

Unless you have a job that pays a very high salary and business contacts who can help you find suitable accommodation, be very wary about moving there.

Any recurring fear of many Albertans is that this energy-driven boom will abruptly end, plunging the entire province into a severe recession. It has happened before, in the 1980s, and the decline was so precipitous that many people lost all the equity in their houses and simply mailed their keys to their mortgage holders or banks.

Congestion and housing costs are considered to be so bad that substantial numbers of people are moving from Alberta to the smaller neighboring province of Saskatchewan, where there are also plenty of jobs but housing costs are considerably lower.

I love Alberta because it is where I am growing up. Good to know facts:
-Alberta has the second largest deposit of oil in the world.
-The highest drop out rate in Canada belongs to Alberta standing at 30%. This is because of the fact that there are so many dumb little things you have to do to get your diploma such as completing Phys Ed in grade 10 and some people can't be bothered. Another reason to justify Alberta's high drop out rate is the fact that anyone can go out to Fort McMurry and get a job driving a truck that pays $80/ hour or get a high paying job out on the oil rigs
-In Calgary the housing market is crazy and looking for a place to live is expensive and hard to find
-Job market on the other hand is great, everywhere is hiring so it is an employees market. Wages are high because businesses have a hard time keeping employees.

And finally, if you're going to live anywhere in Alberta, come to Calgary because the hockey team is better here =P

I have lived in Alberta for 22 years. It's great! Yes we have a cold winter and lots of snow but that's great if you like skiing! Our summer's are nice about 17-25C. Our schools are good, shopping great. It's nice too because if you ever want to go to the mountains it's only a few hours of a drive. We have tonnes of jobs right now and no one to work them. Housing is expensive and so is rent because of our booming economy. Alberta's population is mostly Conservative when it comes to politics. I'm not sure what else you need to know but I hope I helped a little bit.

I live 20 kilometers from the Alberta/Saskatchewan border and NO we do not have rats. I regularily see the Rat Patrol drive through my village. When I first moved here from another Alberta location my cat proudly presented me with what I thought might be a rat, having never seen one in my lifetime of Alberta living. I showed it to my neighbour and he thought it might be a rat as well, another born and bred Albertan. He called the Rat Patrol and they came out immediately. My rat turned out to be a mole, a large mole but a mole none the less. Just goes to show my ignorance and in this case I don't mind at all.
