My favorite laundry soap that as well has a fabric softener in it is the one by Tide. Tide I find does a fantastic job in cleaning my clothes, and as well it has a good brand softener in it, which is Downy. By the way the ideal one would be in the liquid formula rather than the powder.
There is however, one more thing that you should consider, and that is whether you have the regular upright washing machine, or the one that is High Efficiency. The reason for that is if you use a regular detergent on a High Efficiency machine, you are asking for trouble, and you can cause lots of repairs due to lots of suds. If such is the case then you should use the Tide HE laundry detergent, and for you to use Bounce softener sheets, which you would add to your dryer. On the other hand, should you have just the old and basid upright washing machine, like I mentioned earlier, using Tide with Downy softener will do do the trick.

I use the Gain powder(you must put the powder in and let the washer fill up before you put your clothes in) I use the Downy ball with any choice of Downy. But the real secret I have for great smelling clothes is that when you put them in the dryer use Bounce fabric sheets according to load. for a full load I use about 6 sheets. Medium loads about 4. so on & so forth. Bounce sheets comes in scents of 1-5 I use 2 because one is to weak and three is to strong. Two is the right scent unless you want to go around like some flower. (laundry is my favorite thing to clean) I guess b/c I'm good at it! Have fun!!!

Be careful w/Febreez Products: Research has shown that it can kill birds; & harm or kill even dogs. I use it sparingly, and mist mattress covers if needed for dust mites as well as freshening, but, sparingly; air as can. I love Febreez and was dissapointed to hear of the research. Frankly, I use unscented Tide. Unscented can be very refreshing providing the items, esp sheets aren't too soiled. Old fashioned Borax Laundry Powder or Baking Soda helps too; I use Bleach, not so non-toxic, but that fresh "hotel" smell & it doesn't take MUCH ! Vinegar in the rinse cycle can remove any Bleach remnants (w/out loosing effect) if you are concerned about the Bleach. I also use Clorox 2; but, it takes extra rinsing where I live. Hope this helps !

Tide liquid with a contact of Downy sparkling Breeze. Downy sparkling Breeze liquid fabrics softener. For sheets and blankets i exploit a similar detergent, yet i exploit Downy user-friendly Pleasures vanilla and lavender fabrics softener.

I use the Kirkland brand of laundry detergent (purchased at Costcos around the country) and then follow it up with Bounty softener/dryer sheets. I use two sheets per load and it gives the laundry a nice clean scent and makes them very soft, too!

For a national brand, I recommend Gain powder soap mainly because I like the scent.
