That is exactly what happens when you go to sleep. Everyone's consciousness leaves the physical arena, the physical body rests and your consciousness goes to a myriad of places. It's called Astral Travelling.
Everyone does it, Problem is most people are not aware of what happens when they fall asleep so they don't realise they do it.. The only 'normal' recollection is that you have dreamed something. In fact all your experiences if you remember them you say are dreams. But that's not the case. You are travelling into spaces.
Did you know that the path of a true Initiate (ie one who follows a spiritual path) is to put consciousness where there isn't any, and where you go when you fall asleep is the biggest playing field you can find to put consciousness into.
So happy travelling.

Lucid dreaming is consciously directing your dreams. So you tell yourself that you are going to dream about your problem with Joe Blow, and come up with a solution THAT YOU WILL REMEMBER when you awaken. Lucid dreaming is not astral projection.
Astral projection is being able to direct the soul to leave the body and go to a specific place, or to just wander and see what is going on. The astral projection is always connected to the body by a fine cord (usually described as silver). Astral projection can be done while awake, by a person who has trained themselves for years to travel this way (Indian swamis, Buddhist monks, etc). But sometimes the talented amateur is able to do astral projection, usual while they sleep. It is an unconscious ability that they would have little or no control over.
Travelling via astral projection can be dangerous for amateurs, as they are unaware of, and have no ability to fight certain demons that inhabit the realms that astral projection takes place on.

Like everyone said it is Astral Projection / Astral Travel
they are OBE's (outer body experiences) you can do it while your awake or through lucid dreaming or deep mediation.
Astral projection maintain that their consciousness or soul has transferred into an astral body / double body which moves in tandem with the physical body in a parallel world known as the astral plane.
Google it. It's kind of cool, I'd like to do it. But if you got stuck. That would suck.

I've done this since I was a child. I just find myself floating around the house and can see everything going on real time. When I am conscious of this I try exploring beyond the house/room. I have to wake up when returning or I only remember tiny fragments of the event. It seems to work better with meditation or at least I remember more of the experience.

Yes, its called Dreamwalking. Where you leave your body, travel to another realm or place, and your soul tries to send you a message through your subconcious mind.
And by definition it is where you are able to leave your dream and travel into another person's dream, in a very lucid dreaming state. There are those who insist that it can be done in a waking state as well.

This is called astral projection and it is believed to be possible. Some people have claimed to be able to do so, but I don't think there is any way to prove if they are telling the truth. They could take a lie detector test but there are ways to trick them.

I don't leave my body while dreaming. But I have "woken up" while sleeping and I can't move my body. Usually in that state I see things that I assume exist in the spiritual plane. I think of it as waking up in the spirit.

I'm not sure... but I have great dreams. Very detailed and in color. It's a wonderful idea that you may have out of body travel... it's a safer option anyway :)

Oh, heavens yes. Most people do, although they don't know it.
It's called Astral Projection, and it's something that can be learned, if you're interested. Look into it.
